Summer Camp Scholarship

The West Aurora Band Boosters provide partial scholarships for students who wish to attend summer band camps. Supporting camp attendance is one way the boosters can invest in the future and quality of the band program at West Aurora High School.

Why attend a summer music camp?

Camps provide a way for students to not only stay proficient with their instruments over the summer but also to grow their skills in a focused, full-time setting. They are likely to continue development of performance skills, expand view of participation in music, foster independence and self-reliance, inspire learning through novel experiences, build confidence through successful, meaningful music creation, deepen knowledge related to chosen instrument, explore new avenues for performance & participation and develop and strengthen friendships rooted in music-making.

Why now?

Summer camp registration has already begun. Some camps fill up early, especially for certain instruments. Planning now allows families time to schedule around their own summer plans as well as consider transportation and other logistical details.

Scholarship program details:

  • It is open to any 8th grade, freshman, sophomore, or junior student at West who has participated this past year in one of West Aurora's band programs (concert band, marching band, jazz band), and who is enrolled in band for next year.

  • Students must apply for the program. Application should include details of the camp they wish to attend, the cost of camp itself (including housing and meals), and an essay explaining how they expect to benefit personally from the camp and how they will in turn benefit West Aurora's band program.

  • Student applications will be considered according to a number of factors, including but not limited to performance in class, participation in band activities, and the quality of the written essay.

  • The application is for individual scholarships, and funds are awarded according to the following guidelines:

(a) Up to a maximum of $250 for residential camps one week or more in length.

(b) Virtual camps or Day camps of at least 5 days in length – up to $50 for day camps costing up to $150; up to $75 for day camps costing $151-$200; up to $100 for day camps costing $201 or more.

  • Students are eligible for one scholarship per year, and the status of the West Aurora Band Boosters scholarship budget may determine the quantity and dollar amounts of the scholarships awarded. In addition, based on the number of applications received, a lottery may be implemented to fairly and equitably distribute awards.
